Why Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

Fist and foremost, the definition of self care per English Oxford Living Dictionaries is: the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health or the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

When I first started my blog, I was unsure of the various topics to discuss with my audience–I then realized the possibilities. I am using my platform to show the totally customizable personal development strategies that can allow women to live their absolute best life. Many outlets can give one the feeling of satisfaction by putting themselves FIRST. YOU are the most important person in your life and YOU have the ability to change it anyway possible. Once you put yourself first and fulfill your needs, you will feel so alive– I promise. Allowing yourself to let go and be yourself at any time will produce positive feelings and enhance self esteem. 

Forms of Self-Care:

The following self-care categories can help frame the various ways to improve your overall lifestyle and allow the room for GROWTH:
  • Physical Self-Care: Involves activities that can improve your physical health, including diet and exercise. Intake a healthy diet and splurge on the goodies every once in awhile– because WHY NOT.  Go to the doctor when needed. Get a good nights sleep to feel energetic and motivated for the day.

  • Emotional Self-Care: Developing reasonable expectations of yourself is an important part of mental and emotional health. Connect with family and friends or even fellow followers with similar interests and goals. Do a variety of intriguing things each day/week for stimulation. Do anything to make yourself feel great, but don’t over do it.


Nurturing oneself is a key factor in being able to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Given the nature of our busy lives, it’s not so simple for us to make and keep our self-care commitments. It shouldn’t be about doing it “right”, “perfectly,” or even about following some detailed plan to a tee- this isn’t ideal. Understanding the importance of personal needs requires courage, commitment, and willingness in order to fully develop a consistent routine. Through increased self-discovery, it will be possible to gain additional knowledge of your own personal needs as well as influence others around you to do the same.
